Ludmila Ulitskaya have been awarded the Austrian State Prize for European Literature 2014 (Der Österreichische Staatspreis für Europäische Literatur).

The Prize is sponsored by the Republic of Austria and is given each year since 1965 to an author for his or her outstanding literary achievements in the field of European literature. In the past, the Austrian State Prize for European Literature was awarded to W. H. Auden (1966), Václav Havel (1968), Sławomir Mrożek (1970), Eugène Ionesco (1971), Harold Pinter (1973), Italo Calvino (1973), Simone de Beauvoir (1978), Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1983), Milan Kundera (1987), Salman Rushdie (1992), Antonio Tabucchi (1998), Umberto Eco (2001), Julian Barnes (2004), and many other outstanding European authors. Ulitskaya is the first Russian author to receive the award.

The awarding ceremony took place on July 26, 2014, in Salzburg during the Salzburg Festival.
