Universal Thinker
The magazine Le Nouvel Observateur hors-serie (Paris) has named Vladimir Kantor one of the 25 most popular philosophers in the world. An article about him says that in the modern world of “progressive specialization,” he remains a representative of the rare species of penseur universaliste, being a philosopher, writer, critic and publisher.
The French call Kantor a successor of the philosophical and artistic tradition which was represented in Russia by Dostoyevsky, Solovyov, Berdyaev and other writers and thinkers. His works include, among other things, In Search of Personality: Experience of Russian Classical Literature, There Is a European Power – Russia: Difficult Road to Civilization, Russian European as a Cultural Phenomenon (philosophical-historical analysis), as well as the novels, The Crocodile, Two Houses, Notes from a Half-dead House, and The Fortress. As to his publishing activity, mention should be made of a unique series, From the History of Russian Philosophical Thought, which is a supplement to the journal Voprosy filosofii published in Soviet times.
As a writer of fiction, Vladimir Kantor is regarded as the only original representative of the Russian Baroque of the late 20th and early 21st centuries
